Part 16:

Gun-running Green Berets

December 9, 2002

By introducing facts gleaned from my personal experience and the documented actions or reactions of others involved I intend to, both in my writings on this forum and in books to be published, acquaint the reader with the harsh reality of lawlessness sponsored, condoned and even ordered by higher command, often in response to the political dictates of the White House. Perhaps as important as revealing criminal acts to the reader is the detailing of why it is that so few acts are reported and, once reported, why little or no action that is taken to investigate them. Few of those responsible for these particular criminal acts are prosecuted and punished, much less evidence secured or corroborated.

In a nonfiction book, now in progress, titled Devious Elite, I will report instances of US military units or individuals intentionally breaking the law, committing crimes against humanity and taking actions prohibited by law or the commonly accepted rules of land warfare. In most cases, these illegal actions, though sometimes of a deadly nature, were directed by those who use military personnel, primarily unconventional warriors, to achieve preconceived objectives with little or no consideration for constitutional prerogatives.

This true account of gun-running by military personnel assigned to Special Forces units in South Vietnam and Thailand in 1967 will be covered in detail in Devious Elite. Portions of this tragic record of illegal trafficking of military weapons will be referred to in Part Eighteen of this series Who Really Killed Martin Luther King, Jr.?inasmuch as it is probable that many of the 100+ military weapons illegally mailed to the United States were involved in government actions tailored to infiltrate and gain intelligence on Black militant organizations while, at the same time, providing “sterile” weapons to those involved in the scenario leading to and including the assassination of Dr. King.

In the summer of 1967 I volunteered to fill an “urgent” requirement within the 46th Special Forces headquarters located in Lop Buri, Thailand where “real trouble” had been reported by a source whose identity was kept confidential, an individual who feared for his life should the “CO” in Thailand learn of his having reported an illegal activity to higher headquarters.

Quotes shown below are taken from a 20 page interrogatory witness statement taken and recorded on 25 November 1968 at Mechanicburg, Pennsylvania and attested to by myself and Special Agent Donald D. Knutson of USAINTC, in accordance with Article 136, UCMJ, and witnessed by B.J. Leonard which related to the investigation I requested. “...I reported to the 46th at about 0100 hours on approximately 19 September 1967. ...Well, Rittenhouse [a sergeant who worked in the logistical support center which I had just assumed command of] came in and sat down in my office , talked to me, and he looked scared and I’m sure he was. He wanted to tell me about an experience he had had that day, or the day before. On this matter, Rittenhouse explained to me that Buttler [Special Forces Captain Ernest Buttler, the officer I had asked to be investigated] had brought in a box of hold baggage to ship back to CONUS, and when Rittenhouse broke it open, removed the top from it to check and see what was in the box and to prepare it for inspection by CWO Gillis [unit customs inspector], he noted that there were some weapons inside the box . Specifically, Rittenhouse indicated that there were two carbines ... an M-1D rifle and a sniper scope.”

He called CWO Gillis, who immediately inspected the contents and informed Captain Buttler that he could not send them home in his hold baggage. Captain Buttler, later that day, brought a vehicle to the location where the guns were, “put them in the back of the vehicle and took off.” Rittenhouse then informed me that, “previous to this incident, Buttler had shipped out approximately eighteen boxes of hold baggage, and that he and a Staff Sergeant Richard Sweatt, who also worked in the Property Book Office, ...felt that a lot of weapons had been shipped out in those eighteen boxes.” I was told that Buttler had visited the 5th Special Forces in Vietnam and “scrounged a lot of extra weapons; carbines, shotguns, M-1 rifles, M-1D rifles with scopes.”

After discussing this activity with CWO Gillis and my assistant, Captain Peter Crummey, and learning that Captain Buttler had already left Thailand enroute to CONUS with a wooden box of the same size and shape as the one that had been opened by Rittenhouse earlier that day, I called our commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Robert Bartelt, reported the incident and asked that action be taken. The next morning I went to Bartelt’s office and we discussed this matter, and though he recognized that he was required to notify the CID (Criminal Investigation Division), he decided “that the incident would leave a bad impression on the company itself, and on Bartelt as the Commanding Officer. Bartelt decided not to report the incident to CID.”

Knowing this incident should be investigated, but unaware that LTC Bartelt was a Military Intelligence officer because he wore Infantry brass on all of his uniforms, I asked the local Special Agent from Military Intelligence to investigate this matter as an item of national security. He advised that he would want me to be out of country and back in CONUS before he would formally have me questioned, telling me that both of our lives would be in danger if he did it at that time. Thus I was actually interrogated more than a year after I’d reported the incident.

I immediately, knowing there would be an investigation, spoke with Captain Crummey, CWO Gillis, and the other personnel assigned to my office and was promised they would support the need for an investigation and tell the truth of what they knew.

The exception was CWO Gillis, who would only sign an affidavit with a statement telling of “an incident involving him (Buttler) attempting to send a box to CONUS containing one M1D rifle scope.”

Captain Crummey, on 13 July1968, told CID investigator Larry J. Mentink, that Buttler had “sent a large number of rifles, carbines, and rifle scopes...including some automatic rifles ... to his home in CONUS.” He also told Mentink that Buttler was “a Black Power Advocate.” However, on the 12th day of September 1968, when approached by Special Agent Charles F. Eisman for his signature on an affidavit prepared based on his earlier interview by Mentink, refused to sign, said he had no knowledge of those items he had discussed with Mentink and “further stated that he had been directed not to discuss anything that he was unable to prove.” Crummey refused to identify who it was that issued that directive.

The investigators of the US Army’s Intelligence and Security Command went to a special effort to provide me a complete report of the investigation, to include the actual signed statements of the investigators when first receiving information from the various people questioned in addition to the actual signed affidavits of those same people which did not contain the corroboration initially stated by those same people to the earlier agent.

Portions of the report reflect the agent’s findings. Colonel Franklin J. Bithos writes “... it became evident that LTC Robert Bartelt, commanding officer, 46th SFC had exerted influence over the personnel interviewed. This was reflected in their hesitancy in answering questions concerning the activities of the 46th SFC.” In that same report, Special Agent Donald D. Knutson wrote, “Marvin answered all questions without hesitation and in an apparent honest and straightforward manner.”

The entire report of investigation was provided to the attorney for the King family for use in the trail held in Memphis that held the government to be guilty of complicity in the death of Martin Luther King Jr. You be the judge of what happened, who told the truth and what needs to be done to correct what can happen when unbridled power is given to those who command men, money and weapons.

Part 17:

Who Really Killed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.?

December 23, 2002

William E. Pepper, in his book, Orders to Kill – The Truth Behind the Murder of Martin Luther King, Jr., published in 1995 by Warner Books, reported what he learned of U.S. Government involvement as the perpetrator of the King assassination. Under direction from the White House, Army Chief of Staff General Harold K. Johnson and Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence General William P. Yarborough, with the help of other intelligence assets within the United States Government, assembled a sophisticated apparatus designed and used to infiltrate Black Militant organizations and Dr. King’s own non-violent protest organization, to develop anti-King propaganda and provide around-the-clock surveillance of Dr. King himself.

Information provided William Pepper’s consultant, Steve Tompkins, by two former Special Forces NCOs whom he called Warren and Murphy to hide their real identity, told the author of the activation and deployment of U.S. Army Special Forces personnel, including snipers, from the Reserve’s 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne) to form a secret “Alpha” Team. Their mission was to deploy from Camp Shelby to Memphis on a covert operation posing as civilians. In their last briefing at Camp Shelby it was understood, from what Warren and Murphy told Tompkins, that the two snipers would “shoot to kill” Dr. King and Reverend Andrew Young. According to Steve Tompkins, the one condition demanded of him, as quid-pro-quo to their providing information pertinent to his investigation, by the Green Beret Sergeants was that he would never reveal their true identity. “If I broke my word on this issue,” Tompkins told William Pepper, it was likely they would all “be killed.”

Four days after the jury found our government complicit in the assassination plot that killed Dr. King, syndicated columnist Cynthia Tucker, in the 12 December 1999 edition of theSyracuse Herald American newspaper, believing the findings in the civil trial to be based on “far-fetched accounts of a plot to assassinate” and satisfied with her own twisted logic, wrote in judgment that the King family behavior seemed more concerned with being “busy helping further contort the events of his death” then being “pleased by a memorial honoring his life.” The memorial will stand and the family should always revere their departed family member and hero, but few are there in this present world who would lead the way in a courageous, selfless struggle to surface the truth of what happened that fateful day in Memphis when Dr. King was shot down in cold blood.

Interestingly enough, the many (100+) former U. S. issue military weapons, including M1D sniper rifles, that had been sent to the U.S. illegally in a Special Forces gun-running operation that I personally stopped on arrival at the 46th Special Forces in Thailand in 1967 in September 1967 (See Part Sixteen of this series) were thought to be possibly destined for use by Special Forces or CIA personnel to infiltrate black militant organizations as directed by a secret military intelligence unit located within the offices of ACSI General Yarborough. It was shortly after the SFA became aware that I had provided a copy of the complete investigation of that gun-running to William E. Pepper for use in the civil trial that they began a campaign to discredit and ultimately dismiss me from the organization.

If the truth is important to you, the complete transcript of that civil trial is available on line atwww.thekingcenter.com, for you to read and judge for yourself.

All I hope and pray for is that the truth be known, the innocent be freed, the guilty punished and systems established that would help to prevent future abuse of power, particularly that which results in heinous crimes of the sort that murdered Dr. King. A new book by William E. Pepper An Act of State – the Execution of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will hopefully be the floodlight of truth whose beam will shine brightly and draw forth the courage needed by men and women within our government to set the record straight. My dream is to publish, in a book to be titled The Devious Elite, facts that will, when coupled with William E. Pepper’s new work, add to the adrenaline surge needed to evoke national action by outlining in detail what I believe to be the complicity by much of the press and many in Congress that has resulted in the denying of the truth to the American people and the setting aside of justice in this matter. Typical was the reaction of Congressman John Lewis, author of the book Walking in the Wind – A Memoir of the Movement to my request to help put together a coalition to demand a reopening of the investigation into the murder of Dr. King. After receiving no response to my letters written to him in the spring of 2001, I called his office and spoke to a “senior aide.” She informed me that Congressman Lewis’s message was that he was “more interested in helping to chart the future than in revisiting the past.”

It is a travesty to ignore evil of this magnitude, thereby encouraging repetition of the same.

Part 18:

General Quang Van Dang - Victim of Subterfuge

January 6, 2003

Former ARVN Lieutenant General Quang Van Dang is a man of extraordinary courage. He risked his life on 20 June 1966 to rescue me, my eight men and an estimated 400 South Vietnamese Special Forces and Irregular Warriors from certain death at the hands of a thousand man ARVN Regiment that had been dispatched by our CIA, acting in concert with Premier Nguyen Cao Ky, to destroy our camp. It would have been a massacre of all these loyal fighting men as retribution by the CIA.

Some ten days earlier, unknown to General Dang at the time, our own CIA had sent their agent to my camp in An Phu District, South Vietnam with a top secret mission calling for the ambush killing of Cambodian Crown Prince Norodum Sihanouk. My counterpart, ARVN Major Phoi Van Le and I had initially accepted the mission with a quid-pro-quo, had begun training the force we would send into Cambodia to kill Sihanouk and were waiting only for proof that President Lyndon Johnson had honored his part by denying the enemy future use of safe havens all along the border with Cambodia.

When President Johnson denied our quid-pro-quo demand, I sent the CIA agent packing. Then I was warned of the consequences of going against the “company.” Some nine days later a 1,000 man ARVN regiment was sent to attack An-Phu and, in the words of the American advisor on the ground with the ARVN regiment, go after the “Renegade Captain named Marvin who was leading the Hoa Haos (a Buddhist Sect) against the central government.”
Major Phoi Van Le, sensing the desperation of the situation, asked that the Hoa Hao Central Council in Hoa Hao Village send an emissary to Can Tho, meet with IV Corps Commander, General Quang Van Dang, and diffuse the situation. General Dang, not wanting “brothers to kill brothers” simply picked up the telephone, called Premier Ky and the Minister of Defense, telling them he was taking charge of the situation. And he did, flying his senior American advisor’s helicopter with the advisor (Colonel William Desobry) aboard, hovered over the ARVN Regiment’s command and control element and ordered them to return to Can Tho.

General Dang then flew with Colonel Desobry into our camp and personally gave all of us his assurance that we would not be attacked, but instead commended for how bravely and well our people had secured that 30 kilometer stretch of border.

Within two weeks of General Dang coming to our rescue he became a victim of subterfuge, a target of heinous allegations and innuendo perpetrated by the CIA, first published in the Southeast Asian edition of a popular American news magazine, whose people just happened to be co-located with CIA personnel in a Saigon compound.

The attack on General Dang’s character followed him into the United States and on into Canada where he was forced to live in quasi-exile, threatened with deportation and listed officially as an undesirable alien. It wasn’t until late in 1988, when I attempted to locate him to again thank him for saving my life and the lives of so many others, that I learned of his horrendous predicament. The complete story of General Dang will be spelled out in a biography bearing the same title as this part in the Unconventional Warrior series. It took 11 months ofdemanding an investigation, going by formal letter to then President George H. W. Bush and advising that I would fight to exonerate General Dang until the day the Lord returns to take His people up or the day I died (whichever came first), to take the action needed to clear General Dang.

In September 1989 I personally escorted General Dang into this country with him having a permanent entry visa and a King James Bible in hand. He and his wife Nam now reside in the United States as American Citizens.

More than 13 years have passed since General Dang entered this country a free man, having been cleared of all the false allegations, yet I have been unable to convince our government of the need to officially and publicly clear General Dang with a simple press release stating the fact of the investigation and of his reputation having been cleared. It is my fervent prayer that those other American Green Berets whose lives he saved in June 1966 would have the courage and the common decency to come forward, publicly thank General Dang and join in my effort to force our government to be honest about this most honorable man.
As the Bible reads in John 8:32, “And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.”

Part 19 –

Major Phoi Van Le & the Hoa Haos Betrayed

January 20, 2003

ajor Phoi Van Le is indeed a man among men. A rare combination of military leader, protector of his people, faithful husband, caring father and military advisor to the Hoa Hao Buddhist Central Council, he was first described to me by LTC William Tuttle as being “tougher than nails and a Hoa Hao first and foremost.”

It was at the time LTC Tuttle, commander of all Special Forces in the IV Military Region of South Vietnam, offered me the command of a TOP SECRET independent warfare mission naming Major Le as my counterpart, that he told me about this combat-proven officer of 18 years wartime service to his people and government.

After explaining to me the fact of our government permitting the enemy safe-havens inside Cambodia (see Part 8 of this series) he told how Major Le had taken this matter of our government aiding and abetting the enemy to the Minister of Defense in Saigon. He demanded the right to carry the war to the enemy no matter where they were so as to protect his people against surprise attacks that were easily mounted by that same enemy from within their Cambodian border sanctuaries.

In my book Expendable Elite – One Soldier’s Journey into Covert Warfare, to be published this spring, I go into great detail about the Hoa Haos of An Phu District, their daily walk and their courage in battle against superior numbers of enemy combatants.

I find it difficult to express in mere words the quality of character that these fine people continually exhibited in every aspect of their lives. There were approximately 64,000 Hoa Haos in the District of An Phu and I can honestly say that we, the men of Special Forces Team A-424, were able to trust each and every one of them to be loyal, honest, faithful to the Hoa Hao religious tenets and courageous to the extreme.

During the seven months that I had the pleasure to be amongst the Hoa Haos of An Phu, we were the first to take the war into what had been enemy safe-havens inside Cambodia and, to the best of my knowledge we did so without harming one Cambodian civilian. We secured the 30 miles of border with Cambodia, cleared an area once held by the enemy inside An Phu and restored the entire district back to its people who were predominantly farmers and fishermen, and did our best to protect them and their lively-hood from the Communist insurgents.

At a time in August 1966 when we, as US Army Special Forces working with the South Vietnamese irregular, paramilitary, and military forces, had brought relative security to the IV Military Region, our government demanded the removal of the very Forces that helped to make it possible to achieve the level of security then in effect. Specifically, in An Phu, and other areas where the Hoa Haos were the predominant defensive force, General Westmoreland, angered at the refusal of the Commanding General of Military Region IV to permit American conventional troops in that area took the unprecedented step of ordering the Saigon Depot commanding officer (I was told this by the deport commander some seven years later) to ignore the needs of the Special Forces in MR IV. We were forced to “borrow” US Navy Landing Craft and raid the depot, using the Bassac and Mekong Rivers as our route to and from Saigon, taking what we needed as the depot personnel stood by, fearing to stop us who wore the Green Beret from taking what we needed, everything being combat essential.

Major Phoi Van Le was trustworthy and loyal, a tactical commander and defensive strategist who I admired and would want to emulate, an officer with sufficient moral courage and wisdom to demand that we, including myself, be tested in combat to see if we “measured up” to the high standards of courage and tenacity they demanded of themselves.

When the Central Intelligence Agency “arranged” to have an ARVN Regiment attack our camp in retaliation for my personal refusal to assassinate Cambodian Crown Prince Norodum Sihanouk, knowing that hundreds of Hoa Hao fighters and countless civilians would be killed or injured, we knew that they had betrayed the Hoa Haos of An Phu and considered them as cannon fodder to appease their appetite for revenge against one American’s actions. I am that one American and understand completely how that act of turning brother against brother that was averted through the courageous intervention of Lieutenant General Quang Van Dang (See Parts11 & 18 of this series) was merely a prelude to the eventual total betrayal by the United States of all of the South Vietnamese people and the abandonment of our promise to protect them from the Communist invaders.

I thank God for the time I had with Major Le and the Hoa Haos of An Phu and I pray that one day their land will be returned to them and their Vietnamese brothers and sisters as a democratic republic.

Special Forces Association:
Good, Bad & Ugly

February 3, 2003

The Special Forces Association was formed in 1964 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina with the purpose of bringing together all men ever assigned to the US Army’s Special Forces. They publish a quarterly magazine, The Drop, which depicts the activities of certain of its thousands of members, chapters, and the Active, Reserve and National Guard Special Forces Units. It is a Goodorganization in that it brings together those special warriors who have earned the right to wear the Green Beret, that special headgear which President John F. Kennedy personally approved and called a “symbol of excellence, the mark of distinction, the badge of courage.”

Comprised of perhaps 6,000 Special Forces Officers, Warrant Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers, it represents those uniquely qualified, highly trained and exceptionally motivated men of courage. Common sense and wisdom drives these few, others wouldn’t dare tread in situations so fraught with danger that every assignment, every mission, every foray into danger is given only to those who volunteer.

If it were true that these experts in unconventional warfare, civic action, psychological operations were, in fact, uniquely capable of resisting all temptation that would have them take undue advantage of their power and prowess, this nation could readily put together a force of volunteers who could go anywhere, face any foe, accomplish any mission, meet any collateral need and emerge not only victorious, but with a record of fairness, integrity and justice that “Mr. Clean” would be blessed to call his own. Unfortunately each and every one of us who have worn or will ever be privileged to wear the Green Beret and placed in positions, places or circumstances of trust where we exercise great, if not absolute power over the situation and all those who are involved therein are not inherently strong enough to resist what the devil would have us to do.

Thus there is a need for constant effort on the part of SF personnel to keep one’s self straight, to advise and/or report fellow Special Forces personnel (officer or NCO) who are going “off course.” They need the courage and integrity to take immediate and appropriate action when a situation is out of control and is not only illegal, immoral or hurtful of the mission, but would bring discredit on the organization and even its in-country mission. Where the Special Forces Association is Bad and errs grievously, to the detriment of its members and its charter, is when it attempts to deter, sidetrack or deny the truth of evil or harmful behavior of those who wear the Green Beret for the sole purpose of “protecting” the “good name” of the association or Special Forces in general.

My book, Expendable Elite – One Soldier’s Journey into Covert Warfare, is a true account of my seven months as commander of Team A-424 and its independent operational mission in An Phu, South Vietnam from 27 December 1965 through 2 August 1966. With the exception of the incident involving a US helicopter crew’s machine-gun slaughter of innocent South Vietnamese peasants in a rice paddy near Rach Gia (Chapter 2) each and every significant action or happening in my book is corroborated by audio tapes and/or written and signed documents in file (at my office and 2 other unspecified locations to protect same) that were completed by members of my team, interpreters, my counterpart and the man who saved our lives from the wrath of the CIA, Lieutenant General Quang Van Dang. When Robert Logan, who owns the exclusive rights to produce a movie based on this book, had his attorney, Arthur H. Weed, write members of my team to determine who among them would be willing to participate in what had been planned at that time as a documentary film, he was to learn that, without exception, those contacted would not participate. Instead, Attorney Weed received a message on his answering machine identifying the caller as Jimmy Dean, “Secretary of the Special Forces Association” leaving two numbers to call him back at (910-485-5433 & 1041). Mr. Weed wrote his client, Robert Logan, “Specifically, [Jimmy Dean] said [Marvin’s] ‘book was fantasy’ and that the ‘camp never came under attack by the Viet Cong’ and that Col. Marvin never went to ‘assassin school’.” Attorney Weed continued, “Jimmy Dean also stated ‘there would be serious repercussions’ if [Bob Logan] went ahead with the project...”

The Ugly nature of SFA can best be related to telephone conversations I had with my former team members, each of which had previously provided corroboration to me in the form of audio tapes or typed/hand-written and signed letters by that individual. They expressed fear to me, one saying to me that his wife had been called by someone in the Pentagon and advised that her husband could lose his retirement pay if he kept in touch with me. That same man was asked by ‘someone’ in the SFA to be “loyal” to SFA and not to side with me. Another NCO from my team who I knew to have been highly courageous in battle told me that he had been called and told his son, who was either regular army or wanting to be, would have his career cut short if his dad supported me. Subsequent calls to these men went unanswered.

Another Ugly situation erupted when I provided British counselor William E. Pepper (attorney for the family of slain Dr. King) with evidence of illegal gun-running by Special Forces that I had personally discovered and stopped from moving any more than the 100 plus weapons (including .30 caliber sniper rifles) that had already been shipped to the United States. That evidence was in the form of a complete US Army Intelligence and Security Command investigation of Special Forces Officers LTC Robert Bartelt and CPT Ernest Buttler provided me on 8 February 1990. This investigation was based on my discoveries and request for investigation. The gun-running may have been tied in with the US military’s infiltration of Black Power organizations, which was my rationale for providing it to Mr. Pepper for use in the civil lawsuit that found our government complicit in the murder of Dr. King. I was stricken from the roles of the Special Forces Association and members who I have spoken with since that time have told me that they were advised not to have anything to do with me. All these ugly actions were taken against me because I told the truth. I will continue to strive to get the SFA to recognize how important it is to their organization and to our nation, a democracy that depends on these fine and exceptionally well-qualified and highly motivated Special Forces to help maintain freedom throughout the world, to take whatever action is necessary to identify evil within the ranks, investigate, and take action to punish those who are guilty. If not, we stand to lose a valuable source of courage, wisdom, tenacity and skills to maintain this democracy.

Part 21a –

A Need for Courage at Home and on the Hill

February 17, 2003

There is an ever-present threat of terrorism at home, coupled with the ominous potential for war in Iraq and Korea. Friends and family members alike are being called up with their Reserve or National Guard units to join the ever-increasing numbers of regular armed forces who prepare to go to war or who stand ready to bolster those forces already committed in the defense of freedom now enjoyed by the people of South Korea and other democracies around the world. Should Saddam Hussein refuse to comply with United Nation’s resolutions and bring war upon this nation and those whose charter it is to enforce the edict of free nations, the potential for grief will be too awesome to simply set aside in a mad dash to war. The tremendous sacrifice that will be asked of those who fight the good fight, coupled with the enormous tragedy that any war brings to those on either side who are listed in the somewhat euphemistic, but nonetheless disastrous, category of “collateral damage” must be taken into consideration before any nation takes precipitous action on its own.

Perhaps we should consider a better option than war and do what we can to persuade our leaders to use sanity and not pride in military muscle to decide the correct course of action.

Each and every one of us who treasure the freedom we now enjoy and who honor our heritage as defenders of freedom, a badge of honor we have earned in many hard fought wars and through often-time great sacrifices on the home front, must continue to demand of our leaders in Congress and in the White House the utmost in courage, honor and integrity.

As American citizens, we must also have the courage to let our President, who has but limited authority to send our men and women into battle, and our Congress, that elected body that has the power to declare war and thereby commit our entire nation to a struggle for victory over evil, know that we should not be the ones to start a war. Without the mandate of our people brought about by another nation attacking our right to exist as a democracy, or the resolution of the United Nations to go as an entity against an evil nation, we should continue to defend freedom but not perpetrate war.

In the conclusion of Part 21 we will look into what it is that makes individual courage a key ingredient to an honorable and responsive government. I will point out specific instances of where and when our elected leaders in Congress, the Executive Offices and the White House have ignored the pleas of reputable and well qualified persons who have attempted to provide some valuable insight into activities that could have an incalculable affect on the war against terrorism.

Part 21b

A Need for Courage at Home and on the Hill (cont.)

March 3, 2003

In part 16 of this series I discussed the illegal shipment of off-the-books US weapons by US Army Special Forces personnel in Vietnam through Thailand and on via the international mail system, using illegally processed customs declaration forms, to the Detroit, Michigan area. I wrote of the promised testimony I had been assured of by my subordinate officers and NCOs (those who had been directly involved in the entire process of receiving, storing, packaging, inspecting and shipping unaccounted for weapons) that would support my request for an investigation and how that same testimony was subverted by the commanding officer. Actual corroboration of my accusations was initially forthcoming from those same personnel during investigative interviews, as noted and documented in properly authenticated agent reports prepared on DA Form 341 within the final report of the US Army Intelligence Center. However, the Military Intelligence investigators were later refused signatures to support that same testimony when asked to sign sworn witness statements prepared on DA Form 2823 for inclusion in that final report. When first questioned, they told the truth as was noted in the individual investigators reports, but when confronted with actual documentation to attest to those facts by their signature, they modified their testimony to an actual denial of any knowledge of actual suspected wrongdoing. It is assumed that potential repercussions to their military career if they should tell the truth about that matter, made known to them by the commanding officer, LTC Bartelt, led to that change. Colonel Franklin J. Bithos, ACofS G-2, US Army Support Command, Thailand, in his 12 Oct 68 1st indorsement covering a total of 16 Military Intelligence Agent Reports relating to this investigation, advised the US Army’s Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence, via his Criminal Investigation Division: “During this investigation it became evident that LTC Robert Bartelt, Commanding Officer, 46th SFC has exerted influence over the personnel interviewed. This was reflected in their hesitancy in answering questions concerning the activities of the 46th SFC.”

Interestingly enough, during William E. Pepper’s investigation of the circumstances surrounding the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. he found that all Special Forces, intelligence and other supporting military units involved in activities related to Dr. King had been controlled by the Office of the Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence, including their infiltration of black militant organizations by government “plants.”

Also of interest is the fact that a memo for record dated 10 February 1968, prepared by the US Army Intelligence Center, Fort Holabird, Maryland’s P&A Division, stated clearly “Though this is normally a Provost Marshal General investigative function, Military Intelligence was directed to conduct the investigation.” Why, I ask? Was it to maintain control of any revelations relating to a piece of the organizational entity that was involved in the monitoring of Dr. King’s movements, the management of the local situation in Memphis the day he was killed, his actual assassination and (pertinent here I believe) the cover up of government involvement, all of which from what I’ve read, was directed by the Army’s Chief of Staff for Intelligence (General Yarborough). In effect, the suspected perpetrators were investigating themselves and thereby keeping it out of the NORMAL investigative channels while ensuring the end result.

After learning of alleged Special Forces involvement in the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (See Part 17 of this series) I mailed a copy of the investigation report of the gun-running activity (which I had effectively stopped from continuing) to the King family attorney (William E. Pepper) for use in the trail held in Memphis that found the government guilty of complicity in the death of Martin Luther King Jr. You be the judge of what happened: who told the truth and what needs to be done to correct what is possible when unbridled power is given to those who command men, money and weapons, writing the rules as they go and maintaining the covert nature to avoid what they feel is even the remote possibility of detection. It is a sad state of affairs in this once great nation of ours, when our elected representatives, from the White House through Congress, would rather not involve themselves in investigations that target any person or office within the highest reaches of government.

In his May-June 2000 PROBE (published by the Citizens for Truth about the Kennedy Assassination – CTKA) article, The Martin Luther King Conspiracy Exposed in Memphis, Jim Douglas, who attended from beginning to end the December 1999 wrongful death lawsuit brought by the King Family (only Memphis TV reporter Wendell Stacy stuck it out with Jim) wrote, “Almost 32 years after King’s murder at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis on April 4, 1968, a court extended the circle of responsibility for the assassination beyond the late scapegoat James Earl Ray to the United States Government.”

Jim Douglas goes on in that same article to quote Dr. King’s son Dexter, who after the trial said, “It is so amazing to me that as soon as this issue of potential involvement of the federal government came up, all of a sudden the media just went totally negative against the family. I couldn’t understand that. I kept asking my mother, ‘What is going on?’ She reminded me. She said, ‘Dexter, your dad and I have lived through this once already. You have to understand that when you take a stand against the establishment, first, you will be attacked. There is an attempt to discredit. Second, [an attempt] to try to character-assassinate. And third, ultimately physical termination or assassination.’”

Sadly, Jim Douglas wrote later, “The Justice Department’s June 9 report on its 21 month investigation into new evidence implicating the U.S. Government in the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has concluded that none of the witnesses are credible and that James Earl Ray was the lone assassin. “However,” Jim continued, “as the King family has asked, is the government capable of investigating itself in King’s murder?”

Once I’d considered all the evidence, particularly the information provided William E. Pepper by two other Green Berets now in hiding in South America under assumed identity, I thought I’d test the Congressional waters for honest action. My neighbor, who happened to have marched with Dr. King, lent me the book Walking With the Wind – A Memoir of the Movement, written by Congressman John Lewis, a man who had also marched with Dr. King. After reviewing the content of the book I wrote Congressman Lewis in March 2001, asking that he help to put together a coalition to demand a reopening of the investigation into the murder of Dr. King, telling him that I would be pleased to appear before Congress and tell what I know of covert assassination missions. After not hearing from him in the Spring of 2001 I called his office at 343 Cannon House Office Building and spoke to a “senior aide.” She informed me that Congressman Lewis’ message was that he was “more interested in helping to chart the future than in revisiting the past.”

If the reader would go back to Part 6 of this series he or she will note that such a powerfully dangerous weapon as a man-portable atomic bomb, on which I was trained and led a team of Green Berets, with one of our contingency missions being to, on order, blow the hydroelectric plant at the under-construction ASWAN High Dam in Egypt. You will note that shortly after the September 11th terrorist strike I notified the White House and Governor Tom Ridge’s Homeland Security office of the danger these weapons could pose in the hands of terrorists and suggested that they be maintained under strict security measures. After not hearing from either the White House or The Homeland Security Office I wrote Senators, Congressmen, and the New York State Police. The ONLY response I received was from the New York State Police which advised they were waiting instructions from Albany or Homeland Security. That was the 29th day of October 2001.

Does this nation yet maintain the man-portable SADM atomic munitions, and if it does, is it not important to safeguard these weapons to keep them from getting into the hands of terrorists? You know how I feel. If you feel the same, reread Part 6 and then call or write your congressman or senator and demand an answer.

Challenge for the Media – Truth When it Hurts

March 17, 2003

For years I considered individuals in the news gathering business and their respective editors, managers or employers to be either politically motivated, negligent or cowardly when refusing to deal with some of the more potentially explosive subjects that I have, at one time or another, brought to their attention. Though I now assume some of what I had thought to be true was, in fact, true, I have slowly but surely come to realize that certain powerful interests in our government or corporate entities who owe their profitability or very existence to agencies or departments within our government and who might suffer greatly in one way or another from exposure to a given story have and will take whatever action was and is yet considered necessary to assure its demise. Insistence on publishing, airing or otherwise disseminating the wrong story could be damaging or even deadly to that person or organization that persisted in bringing a specific story into the public domain.

The late Colonel L. Fletcher Prouty was a man whom I admired and could trust to tell me the truth of what went on in the Pentagon in the early 1960s, a time period that saw me involved in a number of covert operations in Europe and in the USA that fell within his overview as Chief of the Special Operations Office with the office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. I had a number of telephone conversations with Fletch and we wrote back and forth from 1995 through 1997 as I was putting together corroboration for a series of books I have committed to write, one of which will be published this Spring (Expendable Elite – One Soldier’s Journey Into Covert Warfare) and one of the major items we discussed was the manipulation of the press. He and I both had provided information critical of our government to many members of the press, TV news, radio commentators and periodical editors with little or no success in so much as gaining any strong interest in what we had reported to them. We both agreed some of the information should have rated intense interest and an inter-media scramble to gain first exposure coverage in the national media.

Jim Marrs, in his book, Rule by Secrecy (©2000 by Harper Collins), tells us: “Writing in 1973, Prouty said the United States is run by a ‘Secret Team,’ an ‘inner sanctum of a new religious order’, answerable only to themselves. ‘The power of the Team derives from its vast intra-governmental undercover infrastructure and its direct relationship with great private industries, mutual funds and investment houses, universities, and the news media, including foreign and domestic publishing houses’ (emphasis mine).”

Some 29 years later, in the book, Into The Buzzsaw – Leading Journalists Expose the Myth of a FREE PRESS (©2002 by Prometheus Books), John Kelly, former editor and senior reporter for the National Reporter, a publication specializing in reporting on the CIA, writes that crimes of terrorism, assassination, torture and systematic violations of human rights as being “part and parcel of deliberate CIA policy (the staff report notes that CIA personnel are ‘directed’ to commit crimes).” He points out rather vividly the fact that the CIA itself intimidates even those who many consider courageous, experienced and trustworthy journalists who would stand their ground for the truth (with Peter Jennings a specific example) assuring that their evil ways are protected from public exposure and judgment.

Just yesterday I received information that Ms Kate Adie, an independent journalist and veteran BBC war correspondent, in an interview with Irish radio, reported that “the Pentagon has threatened to fire on the satellite uplink positions of independent journalists in Iraq.” Ms Adie went on to say that the Pentagon attitude was “entirely hostile to the free spread of information.” And I heard (on the 13 March 2003 NPR Diane Rehm show) that the Defense Department is taking selected reporters to the war zone with their military units. Each is provided a military escort, a tight rein is established on their movement and a review authority is imposed on all reports they submit for publication, airing or viewing.

Having experienced the refusal of government agencies, once warned, to take appropriate action to safeguard this nation from terrorists obtaining and having available to them our potentially most destructive man-portable weapon – the SADM device (Special Atomic Demolition Munition) I am now more concerned than ever.

If the reader would go back to Part 6 (Blow the ASWAN High Dam) of this series he or she will have an appreciation for the weapon I am discussing, my involvement with it and why it poses a real danger in the hands of terrorists. The terrorists’ attacks of September 11th prompted me to provide our New York State Police information on the SADM and some “how to” on suspension bridge construction.

Learning from the State Police that they had received no instruction on what to do regarding the SADM devices and advising me that they were waiting for instructions Governor Ridge’s Homeland Security office, I wrote Governor Ridge:

  October 2001
TS:
TRO11028
TO: Governor Tom Ridge, Homeland Security VIA FAX
202-456-2461
C/o THE WHITE HOUSE Please forward to Governor Ridge's Office
Dear Sir,
The following was sent to the New York State Police Syracuse Office on 15 October 2001 and I thought I should send the information to your office for application on a nationwide basis. I failed in my attempt to get your FAX number thus I send it through the White House fax facility.
I was involved in a considerable amount of training at the Special Warfare Center at Fort Bragg in 1964 and have been involved in a few assignments that had to do with the type of actions a terrorist may consider In this time of terror attacks on our own soil.
I enclose my bio just for some background information and a copy of page 304 of JCS Pub 1 dated September 1974 as it contains the definition of the SADM (Special Atomic Demolition Munition).
The first item of concern is the SADM as it is a powerful man-portable atomic device that could be used to destroy or disable power stations, particularly those that are a part of a hydroelectric power generating capability which would, if blown - not only destroy a power source, but contaminate the water that was the source of power, carrying potential deadly and/or injury/sickness laden water (from radiation) down-river, which would then affect tens of thousands of people. When I was in the 6th Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg in 1964 I volunteered to head one of three eight-man teams that had contingency missions with the SADM. My primary mission at the time was the power distribution facility of the ASWAN High Dam in Egypt. The dam was under construction by the Soviet Union at the time with the assistance of a US construction company out of Boston, Mass. At that time the SADM devices were stored at Seneca Army Depot (now closed, as you know). The bomb itself weighed about 95 lbs and the trigger device about 35 lbs. If there are any of those devices still in our inventory, the storage areas should be (and I feel certain already are) under close surveillance and high security.
Second; I believe that suspension bridges, such as the Brooklyn Bridge, are particularly vulnerable to attack and would be the kind of target that would have a great impact on not only the thousands of people who may be on it at the time, but disrupt a great deal of traffic capability. I recall being told in a special demolition course that it would be best to blow only one end of one suspension group of cables immediately adjacent to the concrete abutments. When severed, the cable would allow the bridge to twist and turn as it fell, causing real havoc.
If you would like any other thoughts that come in mind from my previous training or experience, just let me know by FAX and give me your fax number.
Signed, Daniel Marvin

By the end of the week, having heard nothing from his office, I wrote a second letter to follow-up:

  2 November 2001
TS: TR01 1102
TO: Governor Tom Ridge, Homeland Security VIA FAX
202-456-2461
C/o THE WHITE HOUSE Please forward to Governor
Ridge's Office
Dear Governor Ridge,
Reference is made to my fax dated 28 October 2001 that I sent to you via The White House Fax 0 as shown above.
Inasmuch as this fax concerned extremely dangerous subjects of interest during this terrorist attack sensitive time, I would like to know if you received it. And, I would like to know the proper fax number, telephone number and address for your office should I think of something else that may be of interest to Homeland Security
My 28 Oct 01 fax referred to my 15 October 2001 fax to the New York State Police, telling of my being involved in a considerable amount of training at the Special Warfare Center at Fort Bragg in 1964 and my being involved in a few assignments that-had to do with the type of actions a terrorist may consider in this time of terror attacks on our own soil. I went on to discuss the need to locate and safeguard all stocks of man-portable Special Atomic Demolition Munition and to indicate the potential danger to Suspension Bridges to attack by terrorists.
I know your office is most active and I do not expect a formal response should you feel that merely penning the answers to my questions hereon and returning same by fax is sufficient for your office management criteria.
Most Sincerely,
signed Daniel Marvin

After hearing nothing of significance from any government office, on 2 November 2001 I copied the same information on the SADM device to Brit Hume at FOX Broadcasting company via fax # 248-557-1199, to Christopher Porterfield, Time Magazine via fax # 212-522-8949, and on 2 November 2001 to Diane Rehm of NPR via fax # 202-513-3329.

Challenge for the Media – Truth When it Hurts (cont.)

March 31, 2003

IF we are to have a true constitutional government dedicated to the principles of democracy then we must be able to trust our government unequivocally. As I listened to reports of the ongoing war against Iraq during its first days, my greatest concern, second only to my concern for the safety of those in the armed forces engaged in that battle because it was their duty to do so, was for the danger to the Iraqi people. I know from personal experience in 1966 in South Vietnam, as the commander of an “independent warfare operation,” that our government’s leaders, from the President on down through the Chief of Staff of the United States Army and General William C. Westmoreland lied to our armed forces, the South Vietnamese people and all Americans. This was with full knowledge that the daily consequences of those lies and the subterfuge surrounding them resulted in the death and injury of countless men, women and children, military and civilian alike, destruction of their cities and hamlets and capitulation to the enemy. With that as an unforgettable frame of reference, how can I help but wonder if we are now being told the truth? If it was then political expediency to betray the trust of a nation and to abandon their people to the unquestionable conquest by their sworn enemy due to our acquiescence, when that same people trusted this nation and whose every action during the 60s and 70s was predicated on our unending commitment to defending their democracy, what can we now expect and, perhaps more importantly, what can the Iraqis count on?

Going back to what I quoted in Part 22a: In the book, Into The Buzzsaw – Leading Journalists Expose the Myth of a FREE PRESS (©2002 by Prometheus Books), John Kelly, former editor and senior reporter for the National Reporter, a publication specializing in reporting on the CIA, writes that crimes of terrorism, assassination, torture and systematic violations of human rights as being “part and parcel of deliberate CIA policy (the staff report notes that CIA personnel are ‘directed’ to commit crimes).” He points out rather vividly the fact that the CIA itself intimidates even those who many consider courageous, experienced and trustworthy journalists who would stand their ground for the truth (with Peter Jennings a specific example) thereby assuring that their (CIA) evil ways are protected from public exposure and judgment.

This fact is amply supported by experiences I have personally had in dealing with the CIA, FBI and Congress. Those issues related to the request I received in 1964 to “terminate” LCDR William B. Pitzer, the June 1966 assassination plot against Cambodian Crown Prince Sihanouk, the attempt to destroy my Special Forces Camp at An Phu which would have resulted in the death of the members of my A Team (8 Green Berets), the ARVN A Team and approximately 400 South Vietnamese irregulars and finally, the 13 year-long campaign to destroy the credibility and assassinate the character of ARVN Lieutenant General Quang Van Dang, the very man who had rescued all of us in Camp An Phu from the death knell nearly sounded by 1,000 men of the ARVN Regiment sent by the CIA to attack our camp. The reader can find evidence of all these matters within the various parts of theUnconventional Warrior series currently on line in this website.

No government agency or representative in the US Congress, once advised by this author of the serious nature of these potential threats, so much as acknowledged that the information I provided was sufficient to demand, as a minimum, determination of my credibility as the source of such critically important information. Surely, I assumed, once aware of the truth, they would take appropriate action and get back to me. Such was not the case.

I will again remind the reader to go back to Part 6, Blow the ASWAN High Dam of this series and gain an appreciation for the weapon I am discussing based on my personal involvement with it and why it poses a real danger in the hands of terrorists. Further, I remind you that the SADM was listed in JCS Pub 1, an unclassified publication, as a “very low yield, man-portable, atomic demolition munition which is detonated by a timer device.”

On 22 March 2003 @ 2309 hours EST I sent an e-mail to Governor Tom Ridge in the US Department of Homeland Security under the category Security Threats.
In that e-mail I wrote, “Dear Governor Ridge. Please refer to my letters to you dated 28 Oct 01 and 2 Nov 01 regarding the Special Atomic Demolition Munition (SADM) and the information on training I received in the way to destroy a suspension bridge. I have not heard a word from your office.”

Between 25 March 2003 and 31 March 2003, I will send by e-mail or refer to in letter or fax a copy of Part 22a and this part (22b) to the persons and/or offices noted below.
I will ask that each acknowledge receipt of my communication and request that they take action appropriate to their position or office and notify me of that action or purposed inaction as deemed appropriate by them. Should we safeguard our portable Atomic Weapons??

It is incomprehensible to me that no government agency or representative in the US Congress, responded when advised by this author of the serious nature of the possibility of our portable atomic demolition munitions falling into the hands of terrorists. The information I have provided was sufficient to demand, as a minimum, determination of my credibility as the source of such a critically important query. I assumed, once aware of the truth, that they would take appropriate action and get back to me. Such was not the case.

I ask the reader to go back to Part 6 (Blow the ASWAN High Dam) of this series and again gain an appreciation for the weapon I am discussing based on my personal involvement with it and why it poses a real danger in the hands of terrorists. Further, I remind you that the SADM was listed in JCS Pub 1, an unclassified publication, as a “very low yield, man-portable, atomic demolition munition which is detonated by a timer device.” Public recognition of Special Forces operational capabilities using this portable atomic device has been offered by former Green Beret Captain Robert Buskirk, the officer involved on the ground in Laos when our forces used poison gas to dispose of American defectors.

I have not heard a word from your office.” It is almost impossible to believe that, as of 10 April 2003, I have not received a reply from the Governor or his office.

Between 25 March 2003 and 31 March 2003, I sent by e-mail or referred to in letter or fax a copy of Parts 22a and 22b to the persons and/or offices noted below and I asked
that each acknowledge receipt of my communication and requested that they take action appropriate to their position or office and that they then notify me of that action or purposed inaction. None have bothered to so much as advise me of their receipt of my communication.

Persons and/or Offices that were provided Parts 22a & 22b under cover requesting action shown in previous paragraph (Listed Alphabetically):

Is it remotely possible that each and every one of the above is involved in a collaborative system of subterfuge to deny the American people the truth? Perhaps you, as a reader and as a loyal American are concerned that atomic weapons may be available to terrorists and do not understand why all of the aforementioned have thus far engaged in a campaign of silent subterfuge? Will you take the time to write your own Senator or Congressman and one or more of the above and demand an answer? Please do what you feel to be right as an American citizen and send a copy to this website. I am going to wait until the 12th of May to publish the continuation of this part, wanting to build a case for possible action of one sort or another against, in my judgment, either a criminally negligent representative of the people, a corrupted government office or news media whose editorial comment or investigative reporting on certain issues are dictated by those
within powerful agencies, departments or political hierarchy who engage in subterfuge and misinformation so as to maintain a world-wide need for American military infusion with its obvious monetary benefit to those within the military/industrial complex. For the life of me I cannot understand their reluctance to act properly in this very serious matter and I pray that the need for truth will result in proper action.

Part 22d

Challenge for the Media – Truth When it Hurts (cont.)

12 May 2003
The whys and wherefores of silent subterfuge in the Department of Homeland Security, our Congress and the media as relates to the SADM
Is the Media Complicit in Stonewalling about portable Atomic Weapons??
If they are not complicit – Why have none come forward?

In Part 22c of this series, I stated unequivocally “It is incomprehensible to me that no government agency or representative in the US Congress, responded when advised by this author of the serious nature of the possibility of our portable atomic demolition munitions [the SADM] falling into the hands of terrorists.”

Of all the media I provided information to regarding the SADM, only Anne Adams, producer of the Diane Rehm Show, e-mailed me, advising that their program policy included the “analysis of the news and highlights interesting authors and so forth,” advising that they “have no reporters who go out and do investigative reporting.” She suggested that I direct my comments to a news-gathering organization like NPR News, the news bureaus of one of the major TV networks, or a major newspaper or magazine that features original investigative reporting.

No other person or corporate entity within the media I have thus far contacted has come forward to obtain information, investigate or so much as advise that they were “looking into the matter.” Why is this?” I ask myself. I then provided those same media website information for the JFKResearch forum communication by Steve Gaal that detailed information about the SADM, even including a DOD Training film clip that showed the US Navy’s SEAL Team training on the airborne employment of the SADM that was similar to my experience. STILL – NO RESPONSE.

Thus far I have attempted to excite the interest of Senator Rodham-Clinton, Governor Tom Ridge, John Scanlon, Congressman Boehlert, ABC, NBC, CBS, NPR, FOX TV, NY Times, Time Magazine, The American Enterprise Magazine and the Syracuse Herald-American.
I have thus far received not so much as an acknowledgment of receipt of the information I provided.

The information I provided was sufficient, in my judgment and the judgment of two other former Green Berets familiar with the SADM device who choose to remain anonymous, to demand as a minimum a determination of my credibility as the source of such a critically important query. Once aware of the truth, wouldn’t you believe that they would take appropriate action and get back to me? Such was not the case.

I again ask the reader to go back to Part 6 (Blow the ASWAN High Dam) of this series to understand, based on my personal knowledge, why the SADM poses a real danger in the hands of terrorists. SADM was listed in the 3 Sep 74 printing of JCS Pub 1 as a “very low yield [equivalent to 10 tons TNT], man-portable, atomic demolition munition which is detonated by a timer device.” Public recognition of Special Forces operational capabilities using this portable atomic device has been offered by former Green Beret Captain Robert Buskirk, the officer involved on the ground in Laos when our forces used poison gas to dispose of American defectors.

Perhaps the most curious fact is that I have not heard from Governor Tom Ridge in response to my
28 Oct 01 and 2 Nov 01 letters regarding the Special Atomic Demolition Munition (SADM). Would you believe that, as of midnight on 7 May 2003, I have not received a reply from the Governor or his office.

Is it remotely possible that all media organizations are involved in a collaborative system of subterfuge to deny the American people the truth about the SADM? WHY? I cannot fathom why any honorable reporter would try to hide the fact that such weapons exists and that action should be take to safeguard them.

Will you take the time to write your own Senator or Congressman and one or more of the above and demand an answer? Please do what you feel to be right as an American citizen and send a copy of your e-mail, fax or letter to this website.

In the near future I hope to be interviewed, at which time I may then effectively bring forth the truth about the SADM. In the meantime, I pray instead that the proper authority
take appropriate action and, if need be, call on me to testify before a Congressional Committee on this vital matter.

Challenge for the Media – Truth When it Hurts (cont.)

9 June 2003
The potential for intimidation, false allegations and even termination of those who attempt to investigate and report on US Government covert operations and/or their cover-up

Is the Media Complicit in Stonewalling about portable Atomic Weapons??
If they are not complicit – Why have none come forward?

When I first wrote Governor Tom Ridge on 28 October 2001 all I hoped for was a response advising that any and all nuclear weapons, and in particular the SADM, were stored, safeguarded, monitored and secure from possible terrorist theft. There was no response whatsoever as you all know if you had read this series. I have thus far received not so much as an acknowledgment of receipt of the information I provided from any of the aforementioned persons or entities.

Perhaps the most curious fact is that I have not heard from Governor Tom Ridge in response to my 28 Oct 01 and 2 Nov 01 letters regarding the Special Atomic Demolition Munition (SADM).

In Part 22d of this series I asked you readers: Will you take the time to write your own Senator or Congressman and one or more of the above and demand an answer? Please do what you feel to be right as an American citizen and send a copy of your e-mail, fax or letter to this website. Thus far I have not heard from one person saying that he or she wrote on this matter. Sad, isn’t it? Or is it just plain old-fashioned fear?

I provided recorded testimony to Nigel Turner in his excellent TV series The Men Who Killed Kennedy, playing a significant role in Part 6: The Truth Shall Make You Free and provided written testimony to Dr. William Pepper for use in support of a jury trial where he represented Dr. King’s Widow and found our government complicit in Dr. King’s assassination. Those facts, coupled with our knowledge that close to a hundred people who were in one way or another associated with the events of 23 November 1963 events in Dallas, Texas, came to a mysterious end. These include LCDR William Bruce Pitzer, the very person whom I was asked to kill by an agent of the CIA.

There is an obvious lack of interest here in the USA (as you have read in this series), perhaps due to the knowledge of the evil that does exist within our government, and how the truth could be harmful to your health. I now plan to communicate with certain parties in Great Britain and hopefully find a British man or woman with courage and integrity who truly does care about helping their ally - the United States of America - and who would look into what has happened to our SADM weapons. After all, they are absolutely ideal for two man terrorist strikes, having the equivalent explosive power of ten tons of TNT and perhaps a candidate for the title of “weapon of mass destruction!”

Part 24:

Two Vietnams

18 Jan. 2005

This is about the TRUTH. Each and every American should be aware of what really caused Vietnam to now be one Communist Country. This is at least a start in the explanatory process for those who want the truth of how we abandoned South Vietnam and betrayed a nation’s people.

On Mon, 3 Jan 2005 09:07:19 -0600 "Craig Roberts" < This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. > wrote, telling me that he had gotten the email that follows from an Arline Brooks, a female musician
that entertained the troops. He wrote, “I'm sending this to my VN vet friends for further comment” if we wanted to do so. He first quoted Arline Brooks email and then followed it with his reply to Brooks. I will add my comments in red script after her statements and approach Craig’s comments at a later date in Part 25 – Two Vietnams – Continued..

The original message from: Arline Brooks to Craig Roberts was sent on Monday, January 03, 2005 at 12:01 AM. The subject: Vietnam. She wrote: “I was in Vietnam for 16 months, and I haven't talked about it until now. I thought I would share this with you. Vietnam and freedom. Freedom! That's the song we sing and the reason we give ourselves so that we can go marching across this planet, fight wars, and make a profit. Can you tell me how my freedom was threatened by a country called Viet Nam? A small agricultural country most people in the United States couldn't even tell you where it was located. Most people, still can't really say why we were there. How does that threaten my freedom?”

I too served in South Vietnam as a Green Beret Captain and I was proud to do so and to command an independent operation that worked and fought alongside courageous South Vietnamese who happened to be Buddhist Hoa Haos. They were the finest group of people I have had the pleasure to live with for a little over seven months. We Americans went there to help the South Vietnamese people fight off communism and we betrayed that mission and those people as a nation. I am please to state that my area, which encompassed the entire district of An Phu and secured 50 kilometers of border with Cambodia, was the most secure area in South Vietnam when I was forced by our government, in August 1966, to convert the “Civilian Irregular Defense Group” fighters of An Phu to Regional Force soldiers. There were many other Special Forces teams along the borders with Cambodia and Laos who worked and fought alongside those South Vietnamese that they were there to help.
It was our government who aided and abetted the ENEMY – yes AIDED & ABETTED the ENEMY by permitting them safe-havens (sanctuaries) inside Cambodia and directly across from South Vietnam and it was our government who permitted the ENEMY the free and protected use of the Mekong River to move weapons and ammunition and other war goods into the ENEMY SAFE-HAVEN area for them to use to kill South Vietnamese and their American friends. Please read my book “Expendable Elite – One Soldier’s Journey Into Covert Warfare” and you will readily ascertain what I have said to be the truth. General William Westmoreland admits it – and writes it loud in clear in his book “A Soldier Reports.” He actually admits that he was not only aware of the enemy safe havens and their free and protected use of the Mekong River as their main supply route – but also writes how he was prevented from doing anything about it and TOLD not to tell our Congress or the American Press that he knew that they were giving comfort to the enemy. How many of our friends – the South Vietnamese – and how many of our own fighting force were killed or maimed for life because General Westmoreland was not strong enough to demand the enemy not be aided and abetted and that his forces be permitted to attack the enemy anywhere that enemy went after attacking the areas inside South Vietnam? How could he sleep at night? How could Resident Lyndon Johnson, General Harold K. Johnson and Secretary McNamara sleep knowing they intentionally gave the enemy safe havens and a protected supply route?
There are many in our government who would want my book put in the trash bin so our people would not know the truth. My publisher and I are now being sued by the very man who asked me to take the independent operation at An Phu and to be the first to take the war a little ways into Cambodia, who has been joined by five of my own team (read the book and you will know the heroes they were and were told to be) who now sue me for defamation of character!!! Each was surely intimdated as was one whose wife told me in 1995, when I was looking for a publisher, that if her husband were to talk to me they would lose their retirement pay. A lie no doubt: but convince a wife who has to manage the money that “they” couldn’t do that.

She continued, “When I was there, (yes, I was there so I have the right to talk) I remember the soldiers saying, just so much more time and I get to go home. I used to think, the Vietnamese are home. They have no place to go to. They are just trying to live and feed their families, and yet the French can walk on their land and tell them how to live. When the French were done, the United States took over the job. We walked on their land telling them how to live. We flexed our muscles, abused them, and then went home. We did this because hidden factions saw war as a way to make money. They had their own agenda. Troops were sent over and lied to because Americans didn't question. We refused to think for ourselves. We swallowed the lies. We were lied to about why we were going, and we were lied to about what happened there.
I was with a musical group in country for sixteen months, and played from I Corp down to the bottom of the Mekong Delta. One time we played music for a "stand down" outside of Cameron Bay. Troops would be in the field for so many days and come into camp and stand down for three days, and go back out again. A couple of weeks after playing for this one particular "stand down" I was in Danang and one of the troops I played for, called me over. He said, "You don't remember me, but you played for me at Cameron Bay. There were 80 of us in our company, now there are 4. Do you know the most horrific part of this story? The "Stars and Stripes" (which is the government newspaper) reported 6 US deaths and hundreds of dead [enemy]Vietnamese. It was all lies. The figures were deliberately manipulated. I have other stories if anyone is interested. I can tell you about the cocktail party at the Caravelle Hotel in Saigon attended by executives from Bekins, and Shell Gas.”

I can back you on some of what you say inasmuch as General Westmoreland had a US government civilian employee – a GS-14 named Namkin, set up a duo-briefing area in his headquarters. One had maps with information specifically designed to get the “story” to reporters and other guests tht they wanted published. The other area was for Gen W. to brief his officers and men of the truth of what was happening. That is what I was told! We didn’t go there to win the war - though all of us on the ground below the rank of four star general thought we were there to do so and we tried our best to do just that. Men should be sent to fight a war until it is won as we did in WWII. That was a just war. What we were told about North Vietnam’s intent to take the South was true enough – what they didn’t tell us was that we were going to let them in the end.

She continued, “A thought came to me tonight. How sanctimonious we are. We lie to ourselves and others. We have an affliction of being "right". Might is right. How easy it is to fight in another place that cannot touch us at home, and then fly away and come home where it is sterile and safe. Nice little profit making wars that don't touch us seem to be the way to go. The complacency and lack of caring, the misguided ideals, are just rational[e] for our muscle flexing. I am disgusted. I used to be proud to be an American. Now I am sad and angry. The threats to my freedom are not coming from without, but from within. People make decisions from fear, and the fear is being fostered by plan”

Amen, amen, amen. Wim Dankbaar, a courageous native of the Netherlands, is risking his family and his fortune to produce a movie that tells the truth about the JFK assassination. I asked him why he was involved in an “American” problem of such historic proportions. He told me that he wanted to help American become again the “Defender of Freedom” that the world once looked up to us as and rid itself of those who would control the government from outside the White House.

She went on to write “From what I understand next on the agenda is overturning Wade vs. Roe, onto persecuting the gays, and finally a bill to draught men and women. If we take away rights and choices from one, all of us lose them. These are the real threats to freedom! and signed it: Arline Brooks”

Denand the truth from your representatives in Congress – Post what they reply to you and then let’s go from there. This is OUR Nation!
